What is Sublimation & How is it Different from Other Technologies?

The Problem with Traditional Printing

Why Your Logo Keeps Cracking

You have invested a great deal of time, money and creativity in building your brand. You have designed the perfect logo. You chose the right colors. And you printed it on a batch of custom fishing shirts. However... After dozens of washes, the edges of this logo began to peel off. The originally bright colors have faded and become dull.
This is the reality of traditional printing methods on high-performance fabrics. This is why many brand owners eventually ask the same question: "Why can't the design last?"
The answer is not complicated, but it requires understanding the different existing technologies. Not all printing methods are equally effective. And when it comes to high-performance fishing shirts made of polyester materials with moisture absorption, sweat removal and quick drying properties, there is one method that is clearly superior to all others: sublimation printing.

What Is Sublimation? – The Science in Simple Terms

Definition: From Solid to Gas, Skipping Liquid

Sublimation sounds like a complicated scientific term. But its basic concept is quite simple.
Sublimation is a chemical process where a solid directly turns into a gas without first becoming a liquid.
In the field of garment printing, we also follow the same principle. The sublimation ink is specially designed to transform from a solid state to a gaseous state under high temperatures.
And when this gas comes into contact with polyester fibers, it will form a permanent bond with the custom fishing shirt.

How Sublimation Printing Works

Here’s the step-by-step process we follow in our factory to craft custom sublimation fishing shirts:
Step 1: Design Preparation

Your custom artwork is digitally created. For all-over print fishing shirts, the design is carefully crafted as a seamless pattern that covers the front, back, and sleeves.

Step 2: Printing on Transfer Paper
We print the design onto specialized transfer paper using sublimation ink. The design is mirrored (reversed) because it will flip during the transfer process.

Step 3: Heat Pressing
The transfer paper is placed onto the fabric, typically a white or light-colored polyester performance material. A heat press applies high heat (380-420°F / 190-215°C) and intense pressure.

Step 4: Cooling & Permanent Bonding
As the fabric cools, the gas solidifies inside the polyester fibers. This process bonds the design permanently to the fabric, making it an integral part of the material rather than just a surface print.

What Fabrics Work with Sublimation?

This is critical to understand.
Fabric Type Works with Sublimation? Result
100% Polyester ✅ Yes – best results Vibrant, permanent, perfect
Polyester blends (80%+) ✅ Yes – good results Slightly less vibrant, still durable
Polyester blends (50-80%) ⚠️ Limited – muted colors Design visible but faded look
Nylon ⚠️ Requires special treatment Possible but not ideal
Cotton or natural fibers ❌ No Ink won’t bond – washes out

Why this matters for fishing shirts:
Most high-performance fishing shirts are crafted from fabrics with a high polyester content (typically 90-100% polyester). Polyester is chosen for its superior quick-drying, moisture-wicking, UPF protection, and durability. These properties make it the ideal fabric for sublimation printing, ensuring that your design bonds seamlessly and remains vibrant, even under tough outdoor conditions.

Comparison: Sublimation vs. Other Printing Technologies

To truly appreciate why sublimation is the best choice for fishing shirts, it’s important to compare it with other printing methods. Let’s take a look at how sublimation outperforms the alternatives.

Feature Sublimation Screen Printing  Direct-to-Garment (DTG)
How it works Dye bonds with fibers Ink pressed through stencil Inkjet printed directly
Fabric requirement High polyester Any fabric Natural fibers best
Feel on fabric No feel – part of fabric Slight rubbery layer Slight texture
Durability Permanent – cannot peel Fades/cracks over time Fades over time
All-over printing Yes – edge to edge No Limited
Unlimited colors ✅ Same cost ❌ Per-color cost ✅ Same cost
Per-unit cost (bulk) Low Low High

Why Sublimation Is Perfect for Fishing Shirts

1.Performance Fabric Compatibility

Fishing shirts are made from high-polyester fabrics for a reason—polyester:

  • Quickly dry

  • Wicks moisture away from the skin

  • Holds UPF treatments effectively

  • Resists saltwater damage

  • Doesn’t shrink or stretch

These same qualities make polyester perfect for sublimation printing. The fibers easily absorb sublimation dye, creating a permanent bond. Since the dye becomes part of the fabric, it doesn’t interfere with its performance features, maintaining the shirt’s durability and functionality.

2.Durability Demands of Fishing

Consider the harsh conditions a fishing shirt faces:

  • Long hours under direct sun (which can degrade many inks)

  • Exposure to saltwater

  • Sweat and body oils

  • Frequent washing, often with strong detergents

  • Abrasion from vests, belts, and harnesses

While screen printing can crack, and DTG printing fades over time, sublimation stands strong. The design is infused into the fabric fibers, making it resistant to the elements. It stays vibrant, even after 100 washes, looking just as good as it did on day one.

3.All-Over Print Possibilities

Fishing shirts are a blank canvas for your creativity. With sublimation, you can achieve:

  • Full-wrap camouflage – Designs that flow seamlessly from the front, back, and sleeves.

  • Photo-realistic fish – Vivid images of bass, tarpon, or tuna that look like actual photographs.

  • Sunset gradients – Smooth, continuous color transitions across the chest and shoulders.

  • Scale patterns – Fishing-themed textures that wrap around the entire garment.

These effects are impossible with screen printing . With sublimation, the only limit is your imagination.

Conclusion – Why Sublimation Is the Future of Custom Fishing Apparel

Summary of Key Points:

  • Sublimation creates permanent, breathable, and vibrant prints on polyester fabrics.

  • It’s superior to screen printing for all-over designs and unlimited color options.

  • It outperforms DTG in terms of durability and suitability for performance wear.

  • Fishing shirts, with their high-polyester content, are the perfect canvas for sublimation.

  • While there are some limitations (fabric restrictions, lack of white ink, and challenges with dark fabrics), for the right projects, sublimation is unbeatable.
